EDC News: European Union Funding and Research

Research plays a vital role in the development of the European Union and its member states. For this reason the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation's (RTD) main objective is to make Europe a better place to live and work, to improve Europe's competitiveness, growth and job creation while tackling the main current and future societal challenges. This is achieved by the Department:

• supporting and coordinating research and innovation through European Framework Programmes and National & Regional Programmes;

• contributing to the creation of the European Research Area by developing the conditions for researchers and knowledge to circulate freely; and

• supporting European organisations and researchers in their cooperation at international level.

The RTD have an agreed budget of €10.8 billion for research and innovation for 2013.
