January 2015
Did you Know?To enhance the working and living conditions of European citizens the European Union (EU) established a pillar on Social Rights. Each year the European Union choses a specific subject to encourage debate and dialogue within and between European countries. The theme (list of themes by year) is proposed by the European Commission and is then adopted by the European Parliament and EU member governments. EDC News: European Year of Development 2015 (EYD 2015)!!!For 2015, the European Union has decided to focus on “Development”. This is the first ever European Year to deal with the European Union's external action and Europe’s role in the world. Currently, the EU provides over half of global official development assistance. Unfortunately, the majority of Europeans are unaware of this and of the EU's donation procedure (EU development policy). The purpose of the European Year of Development 2015 is to increase awareness, to provide a unique opportunity to engage with EU citizens (Get Involved), and show the EU's commitment to eradicating poverty worldwide. EYD 2015 motto is: "Our world, our dignity, our future" Each month will have its own related theme:
2015 is also the year the international community will agree on the future global framework for poverty eradication and sustainable development. It is, also, the year the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) would be reached. In 2000, during the United Nations Millennium Summit, the international community agreed on eight specific Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to be achieved by 2015 and the EU committed itself to help achieve these goals. In 2010, the EU created a €1 billion MDG Initiative, making available needs-based and performance-based funding. For further information:
