EDC News: European Citizens' InitiativeThe European Union strives to take a democratic approach when determining its policies and legislation. Its latest initiative in following this approach is the European Citizens' Initiative. This initiative gives European citizens the chance to call upon the European Commission to propose legislation on matters where the EU has competence to legislate. To qualify, a Citizens' Initiative must be backed by at least one million citizens, coming from at least seven out of the 27 Member States. A guide on the procedure of proposing an initiative has been published. To access the guide, click on the following link and then on the language you wish to read the guide: http://ec.europa.eu/citizens-initiative/public/guide?lg=en. A copy in Greek can be found in the University of Nicosia Library (Nicosia Campus).
